Australia's End-to-End Protein Production Capability

The National Biologics Facility (NBF) is Australia's leading facility for recombinant protein and biologics production, spanning research-grade protein supply and clinical-grade biomanufacturing, under an ISO 9001 certified quality management system. NBF operates across two Brisbane sites: the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at the University of Queensland, and a new clinical manufacturing suite at the Translational Research Institute (TRI). NBF spans molecular engineering, antibody and nanobody discovery, expression across four host systems (E. coli, Pichia yeast, baculovirus/insect and mammalian), expression optimisation, scale-up bioprocessing, full bioanalytical characterisation, and Phase I clinical-grade manufacturing.

NBF supports all major biologic modalities: monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), bispecifics, antibody fragments and nanobodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), radioligand therapeutics and radiopharmaceutical precursors, recombinant vaccine antigens, Fc-fusion proteins, therapeutic enzymes, and diagnostic / biomarker proteins. The facility serves academic, industry and government sponsors across the entire translational continuum, from milligrams of difficult-to-express target for early discovery and structural biology, through to grams of clinical-grade drug substance for first-in-human clinical trials. Many programmes are purely research-focused: NBF routinely supplies research-grade and reagent proteins, antigens, and diagnostic and structural-biology targets for research, industrial and therapeutic use, with no requirement to progress to clinical development. Each contract is co-designed with the sponsor, drawing on a frontier suite of expression technologies, custom vector libraries and a multidisciplinary team of protein scientists, bioprocess engineers and analytical specialists. As an NCRIS-funded national facility, NBF combines academic flexibility with industrial-grade quality systems, timelines, and project management for antibody, protein and vaccine manufacture programmes.
